From time to time, I’ll share what books or toys my kiddos are enjoying. These are not sponsored posts–we are just sharing what we love! When possible, I try to link to independent bookstores to order, rather than Amazon. Have a favorite indie bookstore or picture book? Share it in the comments below!
Not All Princesses Dress in Pink, by Jane Yolen & Heidi E.Y. Stemple
The pages of this book are worn and tattered and I’m pretty sure my daughter has it memorized.
“Not all princesses dress in pink.
Some play in bright red socks that stink,
blue team jerseys that don’t quite fit,
accessorized with a baseball mitt,
and a sparkly crown!”
An ode to every kind of girl, this easy read extends an invitation to all girls to feel like princesses (or rather, feel loved and valued), no matter what they like or do. For someone who grew up in the Disney princess-saturated 1990’s, I’m here for this message for empowerment!
King of Kindergarten, by Derrick Barnes
Kindergarten is another year away for our family, but I’ll surely be reading this book to my daughter the night before school begins! This is a sweet story of a little boy confidently conquering his first day of school, all told with adorable royal references (“osh kosh and b’gosh” “yellow chariot”) Look for crowns scattered throughout the illustrations!
The Magical Yet, by Angela DeTerlizzi
Move over Dr. Seuss! This is the new “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” and it’s much more enjoyable to read! Each child has the potential to do new and great things, even if they fall down or make a mistake. Can’t read a book? Yet! Can’t ride a bike? Yet! Each of us a magical “Yet” that joins us for the journey and gives us the inspiration to try again. My four year old was mesmerized with this book and proceeded to pull out her crayons and draw her own magical Yet! This will be a go-to birthday gift for our friends in the future.
We love all three of these books because they are encouraging and empowering, and that they feature characters of all races/ethnicities!
